How can I better maintain / care for my diamond jewellery?
Do note that while diamonds are forever, the settings are not. It is advisable to take off your jewellery when performing household chores, gardening and outdoor sports. It is also vital to avoid contact with chemicals, such as nail polish removers, alcohol, perfume and hairspray. You may then wish to keep your jewellery in a compartmentalized soft cloth pouch to ensure that your jewellery items are not scratched.

Daily exposure to household chemicals, skincare products and natural skin oils dulls the diamond’s natural brilliance and sparkle. We recommend professional cleaning once every month in which we use professional jewellery cleaner and brush to wash and brush away accumulated dirt and oil. This is available for purchase at SGD 28 and one bottle can last you more than 5 years if you use it properly. Please contact us if you wish to purchase the jewellery cleaner.

If your ring or other diamond jewellery has undergone trauma, such as having been dropped or knocked against hard surfaces, we strongly advise a professional check to ensure the firm setting of the diamond. This is a complimentary service by Mulia Jewellery for all our customers.

How to choose a diamond? Understanding the 4Cs of a diamond.
Understanding the Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight of the diamond allows you to select the diamond that best fits your criteria and budget. This interactive application guides you through the 4Cs of the diamond. For example, you can move the sliders for colour and clarity to see the differences between their different grades. Click it to understand more!

How do you check to make sure the diamond matches the GIA certificate issued?
Understand the diamond anatomy better will help you do so. Mouse over the girdle to see how the unique identity of the diamond is inscribed in the girdle of the diamond. In Mulia Jewellery, every diamond, above 0.30 carat, issued with a GIA report comes with this laser inscription unless otherwise stated. This allows you to make sure the diamond you get is exactly the diamond that has been certified by GIA.

Understanding Pearls.
Every pearl is unique in its colour, luster, size and shape. Pearl is one of the most beautiful and surprising gemstone material. Some common varieties of pearls include:
  • 1. Akoya saltwater pear (white, cream with hints of pink/green, commonly 3-7mm)
  • 2. Tahitian saltwater pear (purple, green, grey or blue, commonly 7-12mm)
  • 3. South Sea saltwater pear (silver, white and golden, commonly 8-16mm)
  • 4. Freshwater pearls, cultured in lakes and ponds, with the widest variety of colour, shapes and sizes.

To purchase a suitable pearl for yourself, you will need to consider which is most important to you -- the pearl’s size, shape, colour, lustre, surface quality, nacre thickness, the ability to match the pearls to form a uniform jewellery. .
Understanding Gemstones.
Colour, size, clarity and the type of gemstones determines the rarity of the stone as well as its price. The highest quality gemstones are often deemed by the purity of their hue, the depth of tone, and the colour saturation. The best value is in colours that include "slight" traces of other colours, are not too light or dark, and have a lot of saturated colour.

Clarity is important to a gemstone. Some inclusions are acceptable, as they prove a stone’s identity and origin, and will not affect the value. However, heavily included faceted stones are not worth as much as “clean” stones, because internal flaws can spoil a gemstone’s appearance and undermine its stability.

Treatment – In general, natural, untreated gemstones are more valuable than treated ones, comparing two gemstones with the same colour. However, treatment is commonly used to enhance the colour or appearance of the gemstone. It is important to know what you are buying is treated or not. Heat treatment is more acceptable than the other forms of treatment as other forms of treatment may damage the stone.
Understanding Precious Metals - Platinum versus Gold.
Platinum is most popular for wedding bands. Platinum's naturally white sheen will never fade or change colour. PT950 Platinum is made up of 95% platinum and 5% other alloy. It is harder than gold and more scratch resistant. However, platinum rings cannot be resized nor altered nor fixed. It is costlier than gold, and has a higher maintenance cost.

Gold is alloyed with a mixture of metals like silver, copper, nickel, and zinc to give it strength and durability. Karatage, denoted by a number followed by "k" indicates purity, or how much of the metal in a piece of jewellery is gold. Karatage is expressed in 24ths, making 24k gold - 100% gold. 22k – 91.7% gold, 18k gold – 75% gold, and 14k gold – 58.3% gold. Depending on its alloy, it comes in White gold, Rose Gold, and Yellow Gold. Gold is tough and more malleable than platinum. It is also less costly and cheaper to maintain, fix and re-polish.
Taking Care of Your Jewellery.
With reasonable care, your jewellery can be a lasting treasure.
  • 1. For routine care, it’s best to wash your jewellery with a jewellery cleaner once a month. Note that different jewellery cleaner are used for different purposes (e.g. the jewellery cleaner for diamonds and precious stones cannot be used to wash pearl jewellery).
  • 2. Store your jewellery separately from each other as they the metal may scratch the gemstone or pearl surfaces.
  • 3. It is advisable to take off your jewellery when performing household chores, gardening and outdoor sports. If your ring or other jewellery has undergone trauma, such as having been dropped or knocked against hard surfaces, we strongly advise a professional check to ensure the firm setting of the diamond / gemstone.
  • 4. For pearls, never store pearls in a plastic bag. Plastic can emit a chemical that will damage the surface of pearls. The same is true of cotton wool. Also, never store pearls in a safe deposit box for a long time. Like your skin, pearls need a little moisture so that they will not dry out.
  • 5. Jewellery can be damaged by many chemicals and all acids. The list includes hair spray, perfume, cosmetics, and even perspiration. Always apply perfume, hair products and cosmetics before putting on your jewellery. Remember: when dressing, jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
